Last verified: October 2, 2026. Every price for budget hotels in France on this page was read on Booking.com on October 2, 2026, for the two nights named. Brand facts were read on each chain’s own website the same day. Prices move daily, so I re-run the same searches before each update and change the date above.
Budget hotels in France still start around €40 a night for two, just not at the undated “from €30” many guides quote. The cheapest chain, hotelF1, cost a median of €42.50 for two in my price check. That’s about a third of the €133 the average French hotel room cost in 2025 (In Extenso, 2025 hotel results, via Voyages d’Affaires, February 2026).
Much English advice on French budget chains still describes the shared-bathroom Formule 1 of twenty years ago, with prices nobody dated. So I priced them myself: 11 chains in 10 cities, on a November Tuesday and a July Saturday, then read 182 hotel pages for breakfast and room types. This is the budget chapter of my guide to where to stay in France.

Key Takeaways
- hotelF1 is the cheapest chain at a €42.50 median for two, then Première Classe (€51) and ibis budget (€72), in my October 2026 Booking.com pull.
- ibis budget undercut B&B Hotels in 8 of 10 cities on a November Tuesday.
- Inland, the same hotels were a median 17% cheaper on a July Saturday than a November Tuesday. On the coast, it’s the reverse.

What Counts as a Budget Hotel in France?
In French terms, a budget hotel is a 1-star or 2-star. On January 1, 2026, France had 3,459 of them, 415 one-star and 3,044 two-star, holding 19.2% of all hotel rooms (INSEE, Tourisme en 2026, table TOU T1, August 2026). Stars are voluntary, last five years, and are checked by accredited inspectors (DGE, hotel classification).
The chains don’t stop neatly at two stars, though. On Booking.com’s France results, hotelF1 carries 1 star, Première Classe 1 or 2, and ibis budget and Kyriad ECO 2. B&B Hotels runs from 2 to 3 stars. ibis, ibis Styles, Campanile and Kyriad are 3-star brands that compete on price. Kyriad’s own site calls it “notre marque 3 étoiles”, with Kyriad ECO as its 2-star label (Kyriad).
And at this end of the market, the chain is the norm. Chains run only 19% of French hotels but 41% of the rooms, because the average chain hotel has 85 rooms against 26 for an independent (Coach Omnium, via L’Hôtellerie Restauration, March 2025).
Stars also set your tourist tax. In 2026 a 1-star hotel charges between €0.20 and €0.80 per adult per night, and a 2-star between €0.30 and €1.00, depending on the town (service-public.fr, taxe de séjour). Paris adds regional surcharges, so a 1-star room there carries €2.60 per adult and a 2-star €3.25 (service-public.fr, Paris 2026 rates, December 2025). For a couple in a cheap Paris room, that’s €5.20 or more on top every night. My guide to France’s tourist tax has every band.
Which Budget Hotels in France Are Cheapest?
hotelF1 is the cheapest, at a median of €42.50 for two on a November Tuesday and €43 on a July Saturday. Next comes Première Classe at €51 and €50, then ibis budget at €72 and €69. Those three form the real budget tier. B&B Hotels, Campanile and Kyriad sit between €73 and €95.50, and ibis and ibis Styles above them.
The method was simple. On October 2, 2026, I searched Booking.com for each chain in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nice, Strasbourg, Tours, Lille and Nantes. I asked for two adults, one room, one night, on Tuesday, November 17, 2026 and Saturday, July 17, 2027, and recorded the first 25 results each time. That gave 1,121 prices. They’re the first rate Booking showed, before tourist tax.

Medians from Booking.com, observed October 2, 2026. Kyriad ECO (8 and 6 prices) and Brit Hotel (14 and 12) are thin samples. Fewer hotels came back for July at some chains (hotelF1 17 against 38, Kyriad 27 against 46, Logis 23 against 46), so the July column is a smaller set, and a missing hotel isn’t necessarily full. I left out eight prices over €400, which were suites or minimum-stay rates. Logis is a federation of independent hotels rather than a chain, so strictly this is 10 chains plus Logis. Breakfast and room details come from 182 hotel pages, covered below.
The pull agrees with the national picture. Across 2025, France’s super-budget hotels averaged €62 a night and its budget hotels €82, on In Extenso’s panel, from the same 2025 results. Notice how wide some boxes are, though. A chain’s name tells you less about the price than the city and the night do. To see how a hotel bill fits a whole trip, read my France trip cost breakdown.
ibis budget vs B&B Hotels: Which Is Better?
On price, ibis budget usually wins. It was cheaper than B&B Hotels in 8 of 10 cities on the November Tuesday and 6 of 10 on the July Saturday, in my October 2026 pull. B&B wins by the sea in summer and in Strasbourg. Its guest score is a hair higher, 7.7 against 7.6, and it has more hotels.
| City | ibis budget, Nov | B&B Hotels, Nov | ibis budget, Jul | B&B Hotels, Jul |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paris | €87 (25) | €110 (25) | €71 (25) | €80 (25) |
| Lyon | €158 (6) | €201 (8) | €66 (8) | €66 (16) |
| Marseille | €68.50 (10) | €70 (17) | €94.50 (8) | €86 (17) |
| Bordeaux | €64 (7) | €89 (13) | €62.50 (6) | €73 (13) |
| Toulouse | €72.50 (4) | €95 (7) | €59.50 (4) | €72 (7) |
| Nice | €59 (6) | €59 (7) | €138 (3) | €114 (7) |
| Strasbourg | €77 (4) | €62.50 (8) | €66 (4) | €57 (6) |
| Tours | €67.50 (4) | €72.50 (4) | €71 (2) | €73 (1) |
| Lille | €58 (5) | €76 (7) | €54 (5) | €58 (9) |
| Nantes | €72 (5) | €95.50 (6) | €56 (5) | €58.50 (6) |
Median room for two, with the number of hotels in brackets. Some cells rest on 1 to 4 hotels, so read Tours, Toulouse and Nice in July as a glimpse. Lyon’s November night fell in a trade fair week. Booking.com, observed October 2, 2026.
Why does B&B cost more inland? Partly because it isn’t one product. Its France network runs from 2-star roadside hotels to 3-star city ones, and one Lyon hotel even carries “4 étoiles” in its name. B&B also runs B&B HOME, built for longer stays with kitchenettes (B&B HOTELS). So part of B&B’s higher median is simply its pricier hotels.
Breakfast widens it again. In my hotel-page sample, breakfast for two added a median €20 at ibis budget and €29 at B&B. So if you eat at the hotel, ibis budget’s lead grows.
My call: book ibis budget if price comes first. Book B&B if you want more choice. Booking.com showed 431 B&B hotels in France for my November night, against 330 ibis budgets. It’s also the one to check first on the Riviera in summer, and in Strasbourg, where it beat ibis budget on both dates. If Strasbourg is on your list, my Alsace Christmas markets guide covers the busiest weeks.
Why Can a July Saturday Cost Less Than a November Tuesday?
Most likely because French budget chains fill up with weekday business travel. Inland, the same hotels were a median 17% cheaper on the July Saturday than on the November Tuesday, in my October 2026 pull. On the Mediterranean it flipped: Marseille was 17% dearer in July and Nice 91% dearer.
That inland figure covers 346 hotels I priced on both nights, in Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Tours, Lille and Nantes, and 263 of them were cheaper in July. Tours was the one inland city that rose, by 6%. I show Lyon separately, below.
That’s the opposite of what you’d expect if you’ve priced gîtes. The same Dordogne gîtes were 19 to 52% cheaper in October than in July (my guide to where to stay in France). A chambre d’hôtes barely moves between seasons at all. A budget chain hotel in Lille, Nantes or Toulouse, by contrast, is a summer and weekend bargain. Those three fell 27 to 31% between my two dates.
Lyon shows the other trap. On the November Tuesday, the same Lyon hotels had a median of €180, against €76 in July. The hotels near the Eurexpo exhibition centre were the worst: one listed €399 for the night. That week Eurexpo hosts Piscine Global, the pool and spa trade show, from November 17 to 20, 2026 (Piscine Global), which most likely explains it.
So check the trade fair calendar before you book a ring-road chain hotel. It matters most near the big exhibition centres in Lyon, Paris Nord Villepinte, Bordeaux and Strasbourg. If Lyon is on your route, my Lyon vs Bordeaux comparison can help you pick your nights.
On the coast, book early or sleep inland. In Nice, the same chain hotels cost a median of 91% more on the July Saturday. My Nice travel guide and Marseille travel guide cover where else to stay.
Are Budget Hotels in the City Centre or by the Motorway?
Mostly at the edge. In my October 2026 pull, the median hotelF1 sat 8.4 km from the city centre and the median Première Classe 9.1 km. ibis budget and B&B sat around 6.5 km out. ibis is the chain that lives in town, at a median of 2.8 km.
Booking.com listed 55 of the 77 ibis hotels I priced in the city itself. For Première Classe it was only 4 of 46; the rest were in neighbouring towns.
The town premium depends on the night. On the November Tuesday, an ibis budget in the city had a median of €71, against €72 for one in a neighbouring town, and B&B was €81.50 against €88.50. On the July Saturday the city ones cost about a quarter more. ibis budget was €79 against €64, and B&B €85 against €68.50. ibis charged a premium both times: €165 against €110.50 in November, €103 against €80 in July. So on a weekday, an ibis budget or B&B in town is worth checking first. On a summer weekend, the suburb saves money if you have a car anyway.
The edge-of-town hotels make sense if you’re driving. hotelF1 offers free parking in front of the hotel and 24-hour check-in machines (hotelF1), which suits a late arrival off the motorway. Without a car, check the tram or bus before you book. My guide to getting around France covers when a car is worth it.
Don’t expect chains in the countryside, either. When I priced hotels around Sarlat, Gordes and Carnac, each search found only 1 to 10 bookable 2-3 star hotels (Gîte vs Hotel in France). Budget chains are a city and motorway product. In Paris, they ring the périphérique, so see where to stay in Paris before you trade a short metro ride for a cheaper room. A flat is the other route there, within the city’s rental rules.
Is Breakfast Included, and Is It Worth Paying For?
Only ibis Styles includes it as standard: 146 of 149 prices I saw had it. Everywhere else, breakfast is extra. For two people it added a median of €12.50 at hotelF1, €20 at ibis budget and €28 to €29 at B&B, Campanile and ibis, across 182 hotel pages I read on October 2, 2026. French hotels must say whether breakfast is in the price (Légifrance, the order of December 18, 2015).
| Chain | Breakfast for two (median) | Hotels checked |
|---|---|---|
| hotelF1 | €12.50 | 14 |
| Première Classe | €13 | 15 |
| Kyriad ECO | €17 | 7 |
| ibis budget | €20 | 17 |
| Kyriad | €26 | 11 |
| Brit Hotel | €27 | 9 |
| ibis | €28 | 19 |
| B&B Hotels | €29 | 16 |
| Campanile | €29 | 20 |
| ibis Styles | Included | 20 |
Breakfast rate minus room-only rate for the same room and cancellation terms, Tuesday, November 17, 2026. Booking.com hotel pages, observed October 2, 2026.
Where hotelF1, ibis budget and Campanile stated a price per person, it matched within about €1: €5.90, €9.90 and €14.90. Kyriad and Brit Hotel came within €2. hotelF1 calls its version an “all-you-can-eat” breakfast. B&B describes its own as a sweet-and-savoury self-service buffet.
This changes which hotel is cheaper. On the November Tuesday, an ibis room plus two breakfasts came to about €167, against €152.50 for an ibis Styles with breakfast included. In July it was a draw, €124.50 against €126.50. If you’d eat breakfast anyway, ibis Styles is the better deal on a weekday in the business season.
Is the extra €29 at B&B worth it? On an €87 room, it’s a third on top. A coffee and croissant at a bakery counter is the obvious alternative in town. At a motorway hotel at 7am, the buffet wins on convenience.
What €43 Gets You at hotelF1
At hotelF1, you get a small room, free Wi-Fi, free parking and a 1-star rating. Your own bathroom costs about €11 more. You also get lower guest scores: 6.5 for hotelF1 and 6.6 for Première Classe on Booking.com, against 7.6 for ibis budget and up to 8.25 for the pricier chains.
hotelF1 is half-renovated, not the Formule 1 of the old guidebooks. Of the 16 hotelF1s whose room lists I read, 15 sold “Cabrio” rooms with a private bathroom. But 10 still sold “Tandem” or “Side-Car” rooms with a shared bathroom down the corridor. Where both were on offer, the median price was €40 shared against €51 private, across 11 hotels. Read the room name before you book.
The brand is also in limbo. In February 2025, Accor and AccorInvest entered talks to sell hotelF1 and about 130 of its hotels to the US fund Fortress (CoStar, citing Les Echos). As of October 2026, hotelF1’s website still runs on Accor’s domain and claims “more than 150 hotels throughout France” (hotelF1). I found no confirmation that the sale has gone through.
Première Classe is a step up on comfort, with a private shower in every room (Première Classe). The group behind it has added new labels too. Campanile now splits into Campanile PRIME, for city hotels, and Campanile NATURE, for greener settings (Campanile). Kyriad’s 2-star label is now Kyriad ECO (Kyriad), though Booking.com still files some of those hotels under the older Kyriad Direct name.
So what does stepping up from the cheapest tier buy? Mostly a better night, judging by the scores. ibis budget’s median guest score is a full point above hotelF1’s. After that, paying more barely moves it: B&B, Campanile, Kyriad, ibis and ibis Styles all sit between 7.7 and 8.2. Families should note one more difference. Of the 20 ibis budgets I checked, 18 listed triple or bunk-bed rooms, against 7 of 16 hotelF1s. And in France a “double” usually means one bed, as my first-time-in-France tips explain.
Is Free Cancellation Worth Paying For?
Often, yes, and it’s the price gap to check before you book anywhere. In my October 2026 hotel-page sample, a free-cancellation rate cost a median 6 to 17% more than the non-refundable rate for the same room. The gap was +5.7% at B&B and +8.9% at Première Classe. It rose to +14.5% at ibis budget, +16.2% at hotelF1, +16.7% at Campanile and +17.4% at ibis.
The cheapest price you see is usually the non-refundable one. For a road trip with loose plans, the extra 6 to 17% buys the right to change your mind. For a fixed night, like an early flight from Paris, the non-refundable rate is fine.
Should you book direct instead? I didn’t compare chain websites with Booking.com, so I can’t tell you which is cheaper. What I can tell you is that the chains sell to members. B&B’s B&me programme is free. Its paid tier, B&me CLUB, costs €39 a year and takes 10% off the standard rate and breakfast, plus 5% off promotions. It also earns 100 points a night, and 300 points buys a breakfast (B&B HOTELS, B&me CLUB). Accor and Louvre Hotels run their own programmes, so check the member rate on the chain’s site against Booking.com before you pay.
However you book, the tourist tax is either added at the hotel or shown as “taxes and charges” on top of the room. And at the cheapest chains, expect to check in at a machine if you arrive after the desk closes. If even €43 is more than you want to spend, a town campsite pitch cost about €20 for two in my guide to camping in France. And for one splurge night on the same trip, I priced château hotels in France from €102.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest hotel chain in France?
hotelF1. In my October 2026 Booking.com pull across 10 cities, it had a median of €42.50 for two on a November Tuesday and €43 on a July Saturday. Première Classe came next at about €50, then ibis budget at €69 to €72, before breakfast and tourist tax.
Is ibis budget or B&B Hotels better?
On price, ibis budget. It was cheaper in 8 of 10 cities on a November Tuesday and 6 of 10 on a July Saturday, and its breakfast costs less. B&B scored slightly higher (7.7 against 7.6), has more hotels, and was cheaper on the coast in summer and in Strasbourg.
How much is a budget hotel in France per night?
In my pull, the budget chains ran from a €42.50 median for two at hotelF1 to €95.50 at Kyriad. Breakfast and tourist tax come on top. Across 2025, France’s super-budget hotels averaged €62 a night on In Extenso’s panel, and budget hotels €82.
Does hotelF1 still have shared bathrooms?
Some rooms do. Of 16 hotelF1s I checked in October 2026, 15 sold Cabrio rooms with a private bathroom. But 10 still sold Tandem or Side-Car rooms with a shared bathroom, about €11 cheaper. Check the room name before you book.
Is breakfast included in French budget hotels?
Usually not. Of the 11 chains I priced, only ibis Styles included it as standard. Elsewhere, breakfast for two added a median of €12.50 at hotelF1, €20 at ibis budget and €28 to €29 at B&B, Campanile and ibis.
The Bottom Line
- Cheapest: hotelF1 and Première Classe, at about €43 to €51 for two, if you can live with guest scores around 6.5.
- Best value: ibis budget, a full point better on reviews for about €26 to €30 more.
- Most choice: B&B Hotels, and the one to try first on the Riviera in summer.
- Breakfast included: ibis Styles, which beat ibis plus breakfast in November.
- Timing: inland, budget chains are cheaper on summer weekends. On the coast, and in trade fair weeks, they aren’t.
- Location: on a weekday, check the ibis budget or B&B in town first. It cost about the same as the suburban one in November, though about a quarter more in July.
Budget hotels in France are one answer among several. For a week in the countryside, a gîte usually beats them, as my gîte vs hotel comparison shows. For the whole trip budget, start with my France trip cost breakdown. To pick your base, go back to my guide to where to stay in France.
